Ulrich Zwingli preaches reformation in Switzerland. Charles, Archduke of Austria (and king of Spain) is elected Holy Roman Emperor; he retires in 1556. Hernan Cortés lands on the coast of Yucutan, marches on the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, and kills Moctezuma; horses appear in the New World for the first time. The navigator Vasco Nunez de Balboa is beheaded in Spain for desertion and treason. Ferdinand Magellan attempts a voyage around the world: he dies en route and his crew complete the voyage in 1522.
